UNITED STATES OF AMERICA SHRUGS OFF DISMAL WEATHER TO WIN WORLD AMATEUR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 11TH TIME

BAD SAAROW, GERMANY - The United States of America weathered a raw and rainy final round Sunday at Sporting Club Berlin and secured the Eisenhower Trophy for a record 11th time, winning the World Amateur Team Championship by 16 strokes over defending champion Great Britain and Ireland. It was just the second USA victory since 1982 in the biennial competition for the Eisenhower Trophy, an event in which the country has only twice finished outside the top five. Bryce Molder, a 21-year-old first-team All-America last season for Georgia Tech, ignored the conditions to shoot 4-under-par 68 over the Faldo Course, leading the USA to a 3-under score of 213 for the day. That put the USA at 23-under 841 and gave it the third-largest margin of victory in championship history. Those two largest victories were also registered by the USA, in 1960 and 1980. “A little bit earlier in the week, during one of our team meetings, I mentioned that it was so nice to have a chance to compete as a team instead of as individuals,” said Molder, whose 15-under 273 for the week made him the lowest individual scorer. “Very rarely do we get to celebrate a victory with someone other than family and friends.” The USA went into the final round leading by seven shots and gradually pulled away from all challengers. GBI gained the silver medal position on the podium after a closing score of 220 on the Faldo Course. Australia, which won the title four years ago in Manila, Philippines, was another shot back and settled for the bronze at 858 while Sweden, the champion a decade ago, took fourth at 862. Germany, never better than sixth place in 1986 and 1992, was attempting to become only the fifth host to earn a medal. But it had no individual scores below Tino Schuster’s 74 and tumbled over the closing holes to a disappointing fifth place at 865. That positioned Germany a stroke ahead of 1992 champion New Zealand. Denmark was seventh at 867 followed by Italy in eighth at 871, Finland ninth at 872 and first-round co-leader Canada at 11-over 875. Steady rains pelted the record 59 national teams as they played the Faldo and Palmer Courses on a day when temperatures barely crested 60 degrees (16 degrees Celsius) and winds gusted to nearly 20 mph. Although the skies occasionally brightened and the winds died briefly, the blustery conditions soon returned to hinder the players. That made all the more remarkable Molder’s 68 and a 70 by teammate Ben Curtis, likely making the last start of his amateur career. David Eger, the 48-year-old veteran of the side who played in this event in 1990, when the USA earned a silver medal, added a 75 while a 76 by Jeff Quinney, who only six days earlier hoisted the U.S. Amateur trophy, did not count on the day. “It was awful out there, and it was a day of survival for 234 (players),” Eger said. “Bryce and Ben were truly the cream of the field today and made this day easier for (captain) Judy (Bell), Jeff and I. He allowed us to slog around out there and try to stay dry.” USA had trouble shaking Germany in the early going as the host team looked as if it was preparing to make a run at the lead. But the USA squad pulled away gradually to lead by a dozen at the turn before Germany faded and gave way to GBI. “I am disappointed to come second,” said Peter McEvoy, who captained GBI to a four-shot triumph over Australia two years ago in Santiago, Chile, and entered this week with high expectations. “Other than Paul (Casey) we underperformed. The United States total was exceptional, especially today, and even by playing our best we couldn’t have contended.” Casey’s 277 total made him the second-lowest individual and put him 12 shots better than teammate Luke Donald and 18 shots better than anyone else on the GBI team. But Casey himself struggled to a 74 in the final round. Eger and Curtis wound up in the top six individually, at 284 and 287, respectively. The championship is conducted by the International Golf Federation , founded in 1958 to encourage the international development of the game and to employ golf as a vehicle to foster friendship and sportsmanship. Recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the official international federation for golf, the IGF comprises members representing 94 national governing bodies of golf. --Note: Germany is GMT +1.
