World Amateur Golf Rankings
France Leads By Three Strokes After Third Round; USA Second

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (26 October) – With a 5-under-par total on the day, France gained the lead and is three strokes ahead of the USA, at 7-under-par, 425 after the third round of the 20002 World Amateur Team Championship at Saujana Golf & Country Club.

“We knew we had to play under par and that is difficult when you are in the state of mind to play safe,” said French coach Anne Leconiat.

France and defending champion USA shared the lead at 2-under-par after two rounds. However, a 4-under-par 68 from 2002 European champion Rafael Pellicioli and a 1-under-par 71 from Gregory Bourdy Saturday broke the second day deadlock.

“The only strategy is to make the best shots,” said French captain Bernard Casanave. “We must give everything we have.”

The USA, which lost its first-day five-stroke lead Friday, regained some it its early momentum with a pair of 1-under-par 71s from Hunter Mahan and D.J. Trahan to post a 4-under-par total of 428.

“We cannot worry about the other teams we will be playing with,” Trahan, the 2002 U.S. collegiate player of the year, said. “We have to play the golf course and get it in the hole as soon as possible.”

All of the top scoring half of the field played the Bunga Raya Course Saturday and will play the Palm Course in the final round. The other scoring half reversed that order of play.

Australia's Marcus Fraser shot a 5-under-67 and Adam Groom's 2-under-70 to propel them into third place at even par 432, a move of nine positions. They are seven strokes behind France and four strokes behind the USA and have progessed steadily up the standings from T31 to T12 to third.

“Our goal today was two scores in the 60s and we achieved that,” said Australian captain Roger Hunt. “We are thoroughly delighted. From the first day, we weren't despondent. We fought back.”

With its strong third-day finish, Australia is in a position to become the first country to win both the Espirito Santo and Eisenhower Trophies since the USA in 1994.

Following Australia in fourth place and nine shots back are Austria and the Philippines at 2-over-par 434. England, Spain and New Zealand are tied for sixth at 3-over-par 435. Argentina, which started the day third, is ninth at 4-over-par 436 and Italy is 10th at 5-over-par 437.

Italy, with a championship low round of 6-under-par 66 (four birdies, one eagle) from Edoardo Molinari, vaulted 17 spots to 10th. His younger brother, Francesco, fired a 1-under-par 71 to give the Italian team a three-day total of 7-under-par total of 137 for the third round.

Play was suspended for nearly an hour at 3:30 p.m.

Conducted by the World Amateur Golf Council, which comprises national governing bodies of golf in more than 100 countries, the World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur competition, which is rotated among three geographic zones: Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.

Each team, which has two or three players, plays 18 holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72 holes) total is the team's score for the championship.

The 2004 World Amateur Team Championship will be played at the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort and Country Club in Puerto Rico.
