France Shaves Deficit, Tied With USA After Second Round

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (25 October) – France, with conservative and steady play, overcame a five-stroke deficit and tied the USA for the lead at 2-under-par 286 after the second day of the 2002 World Amateur Team Championships at Saujana Golf & Country Club.

“We told our players that you have to manipulate the course,” said French coach Anne Leconiat. “You can't be aggressive.”

Using a 3-under-par 69 from Gregory Bourdy, which included five birdies and two bogeys, and a 3-over-par 75 from Eric Chaudouet, France shot even-par 144. Bourdy was tied for the low individual round of day with Mao-Chang Sung of Chinese Taipei, Tim Wilkinson of New Zealand and Thomas Ortner of Austria.

The USA, which began day with a five-stroke lead over France, dropped all of its cushion on the Bunga Raya Course. Hunter Mahan, with an even-par 72, and Ricky Barnes, with a 5-over-par 77, registered the counting scores for the Americans.

“It was a tough day,” said USA captain O. Gordon Brewer Jr. “Hunter (Mahan), fortunately, kept us in it. He's been very steady.”

“Our game plan is that we got away with a terrible day (Friday),” said Barnes, the 2002 U.S. Amateur champion. “It's not like we're in 20th place and we have 10 shots to make up.”

Following France and the USA, Argentina was three strokes back at 1-over-par 289. Tied for fourth and four shots behind were Austria and England at 2-over-par 290.

The Austrians made the largest move up the leaderboard with a jump of 14 spots on the merits of the day's best total of 4-under-par 140. Slovakia, notably, while near the bottom of the standings, managed a 20-stroke improvement from the first to second day (179-159).

The field will be divided in half and the top portion will play the Bunga Raya Course Saturday and the Palm Course Sunday. The bottom half of the standings will reverse that order of play.

Conducted by the World Amateur Golf Council, which comprises national governing bodies of golf in more than 100 countries, the World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur competition, which is rotated among three geographic zones: Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.

Each team, which has two or three players, plays 18 holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72 holes) total is the team's score for the championship.
